Baron Eugene Fersen was born November 18, 1874, in St. Petersburg, Russia. He came from a wealthy and aristocratic family, which held lands and titles in Russia and abroad. How then did his collection of art, furniture, and writing come to reside here, at the Columbia Gorge Museum?

Spreading Light: Eugene Fersen and the Science of Being tells the story of Eugene Fersen’s immigration to the United States and his lifelong work to spread his philosophy, the Science of Being. The story begins with Fersen’s arrival in the United States after the Russian Revolution in 1918. Fersen then spent the next three decades traveling across the United States and Canada as he gave lectures and built Lightbearer centers, before finally settling in Seattle, WA and purchasing land on Archer Mountain in Skamania County.

Visit the exhibition to learn more about this enigmatic figure and his philosophy through discussions of his life, his writings and his influences.
